Women Taking Aim: More Women Buying Guns

By 9NewsNow WUSA9.com

"I was a victim of a crime. A rape crime," says a woman who wants to remain anonymous. A .38 Special is her weapon of choice. And she knows how to use it.

"I was quite scared of guns. They scared me to death,"

That was before she met Tina Wilson-Cohen. Wilson-Cohen is a National Rifle Association (NRA) certified firearms instructor and the founder of the Protected Citizens Shooting Academy in Centreville, Virginia which is home to the Shooting Divas

"The Shooting Divas of DMV was just sort of an afterthought," says Wilson-Cohen. "After teaching as an NRA instructor I researched hoping to find something just for women. Women teaching other women in firearms and self-defense. And I really didn't find anything. So I went out to Meet-Up.com and I started the Shooting Divas of the DMV. And that was in November. Within 24-hours I had 99 members. Female members. So that's telling me there's this huge desire out there.

"They empower each other. We all understand each other. Because we have a gun. And people that don't have a gun, my friends in particular, they don't particularly like that because they don't like guns because they've never touched one. But we get each other."

"I want them [women] to be able to take away that they can be very, very, very good marksmen. Just as well as a man. Regardless of their body size and regardless of their age," says Wilson-Cohen. "I also believe that law enforcement are there to enforce the law. And it's up to us to be able to protect ourselves."

Gun shop owners and the NRA will tell you, anecdotally, more women are buying guns.

One member of the Shooting Divas says "It's like putting on lipstick. It's just part of my make-up." She says. "I'm not going to be a victim anymore," says 38-Special. "I'm a survivor. And I want to continue to be a survivor. And so my gun protects me and it empowers me."

Security Tip: “give away” Wallet

FerFAL over at the Modern Survivalist is recomending having a second, fake, wallet on hand - to give to a would-be mugger. Just an old wallet with a dollar or two in it and some fake credit cards. When the mugger demands your money, jsut hand over the "give away" wallet.

I'm not sure that this will keep you from getting assaulted, or worse; But in the absence of other options, it might just work.

Home Invasion Attempt

By FerFAL

My dentist called last night to cancel an appointment for this morning. Seems that they were having dinner when they heard someone kicking their main entrance door, hard. Her husband, also a dentist, starts shouting but the attacker keeps kicking until he breaks the lower part of the door, his foot goes right through it. For whatever reason, the person just pulled his foot out of the door and escaped. It could have been that they saw someone noticing what he or them where up to, maybe a police car was near by, who knows? If they think someone just called the cops they usually leave. She was a bit stressed but otherwise ok.

This happens pretty often, and I keep getting emails from all across USA where these events are becoming more and more common. Even in the “safe” neighborhoods, home invasions with and without people inside are growing problem.

What can we learn about this type of incident :
1) Have a gun. I want to think its self-explanatory that this means you’ll only be buying it after doing some serious soul search and you conclude you have the required maturity and confidence to handle one safely and that you will get professional training so as to know how to use it.
2) As it sometimes happens (and I’m surprised to see some people still don’t believe this) some criminals just don’t care if you’re inside.
3) The door folks! Have a security door, preferably professionally installed, get a bulletproof one if you can afford it. The main door is the quickest access to your home, especially in USA doors are just for looks, a well placed kick sends 95% of the doors in USA flying open. This guy, he apparently kicked the lower section of the door, not a pro. Had he kicked strongly where the lock is so as to bust the hinges instead of breaking the actual door, he would have gotten inside in a matter of seconds.

Getting a CHL in TX. What's involved.

By Zee

I realized that although I recommend getting a CHL I haven't covered the actual process. Some of my readers may not know what how difficult/easy/expensive it is to get a CHL in Texas.

GC Ch. 411. DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY OF THE STATE OF TEXAS Subch. H. LICENSE TO CARRY A CONCEALED HANDGUN

More Americans now willing to take "extreme measures" to get money.

By Zee

25.7% of Survey respondents said that they would resort to "extreme measures." to come up with money.

If you are wondering what "extreme measures" are, consider that it must be more extreme than "those who would pawn their possessions, sell their home, or take out a payday loan" because that was a seperate question. Starting to sound scarry huh?

Drivers shot in "Bump & Rob" attacks

This article is from Florida, but I'm sure the trend in increasing elsewhere as well.

Drivers are being robbed at gunpoint. The most recent incidents happened early Thursday. The victim got out of his car to check whether it was damaged. The passenger and driver of the SUV approached him with a gun. The passenger shot the victim twice.

Police advise: "If you are driving on the road [at night] and another car bumps you from behind, do not get out of your car."

TheModernSurvivalist: Situational Awareness

By far, the best thing that you can do to stay safe is to maintain Situational awareness.
Situational awareness is the process of recognizing a threat at an early stage and taking measures to avoid it. Being observant of one’s surroundings and identifying potential threats and dangerous situations is more of an attitude or mindset than it is a hard skill. Because of this, situational awareness is not just a process that can be practiced by highly trained government agents or specialized corporate security counter-surveillance teams — it can be adopted and employed by anyone. [1]

Situational Awareness is simply being aware of what is happening around you at all times, and keeping your fight or flee options in mind. The goal is to increase your odds of making it home safe tonight.

This has to be ONE OF THE BEST, IF NOT THE BEST article on the subject of being aware of your surroundings AT ALL TIMES.

Freedom From Fear: Spotting Trouble Before it Happens
By Kelly McCann aka “Jim Grover”
From Guns and Ammo

Those things you are most likely to see before an attack are called “pre-incident indicators.” They are peculiar things you will recognize if you know what to look for. Any one of them alone is probably not enough to call out the cavalry, but when two or more appear, there is need for concern. If you pick up two or more of these indicators, take immediate steps to get out of the situation, place or activity in which you’re involved.

Forget cocktails at Pastis. The new girls’ night out is packing heat

By STEFANIE COHEN

In strappy sandals and a flouncy blue dress, the pretty Demetria Chappo couldn’t look more out of place with a rifle in her hand. As she aligns her arms, positions her head and straightens her back, she goes through a mental checklist to ensure her body is in proper position.

Then she takes a deep breath and pulls the trigger. A second later — smack! — her bullet hits the bull’s-eye.

“It disturbs me to say it, but it felt pretty natural and organic,” says the 33-year-old Boerum Hill resident, who is a marketing consultant, ceramic artist, longtime yoga enthusiast and now, amateur markswoman.

Chappo says she came to the Westside Pistol & Rifle Range in Chelsea with a girlfriend to let off some steam. “I’ve been going through a lot of changes recently, and I remembered that I really liked archery when I was a Girl Scout,” she says. “When I got an e-mail about this event, I said, ‘Let’s do it.’ ”

Twenty-one rifle-totin’ mamas showed up for last week’s event, which took place at the very same range where Robert De Niro’s Travis Bickle maniacally fired his guns in “Taxi Driver.” The soiree was organized by Urban Girl Squad, a social networking group that offers New York women a shot at adventurous activities like pole dancing and horseback riding.

She says the class fills up faster than a speeding bullet; there was a waiting list 30 deep for last week’s blowout.

That’s right. Girls’ night out is now more gunslinging than cocktail-sipping.

Lauren Harrison came to the range sporting an elegant tweed jacket and practical heels, which did not impede her aim as she pumped bullets into a target like a pro.

“I’m from Texas, and I did it as a kid,” says Harrison, a 30-year-old attorney. “This was not my first time at the rodeo.”

Her friend, Lisa Rines, a 30-year-old therapist, says that shooting a gun was on her “bucket list” — which she promptly crossed off by hitting 10 bull’s-eyes.

“It felt great,” she says, cheeks flushed and smelling of gun smoke.

“I was a little nervous about it, but when I was firing, I felt really powerful and strong.”

“I think more and more women feel like they should be responsible for their own safety.”

Woman Shot Intruder 9 Times In Self Defense

This woman was very lucky to have survived. Keeping her witts and getting to her handgun saved her. Note that the little .22 that she carried took so many shots to stop the intruder. A larger caliber (at least 380 or 9mm) would have been prudent.

by WSBTV

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -- An intruder who was shot and killed after a confrontation with a Duluth woman in her shower.  He was likely stalking her for days and may have other victims, Gwinnett police said.

The 53-year-old woman was alone at the time of the Wednesday morning attack.  She was getting out of the shower when she was met by a strange man with a kitchen knife, police said. They said there was a struggle in the bathroom, and she fell in the tub.

More guns in educated hands actually leads to less violent crime.

More guns in educated hands actually leads to less violent crime.  Time and time again statistics show this! (the numbers that aren't heavily skewed by the Brady campaign).

Why is this?

Because the genie is out of the bottle folks.  Criminals wont give up their guns.  Police can't be everywhere to protect us (and the Supreme court says they don't even have the obligation to!)  So we have to protect ourselves.  (We should be able to anyway!) That means that we need guns too.

The Supreme court has also ruled that the 2nd amendment applies to individuals - that means the right to keep AND BEAR arms.  Concealed or open carry is the solution.

Florida Bill Could Muzzle Doctors On Gun Safety

Florida Gov. Rick Scott is expected to sign a bill that will make the state the first in the nation to prohibit doctors from asking patients if they own guns. The bill is aimed particularly at pediatricians, who routinely ask new parents if they have guns at home and if they're stored safely.

Pediatricians say it's about preventing accidental injuries. Gun rights advocates say the doctors have a political agenda.

Leftist gun-control nuts want to abuse our trust in doctors to create “gun registries” that will be used in future control lobbying efforts. THAT is what this is about. Not safety. Tell your Doctor to mind his own business.

Gun accidents do not happen when the gun safety rules are followed. What idiots don’t follow them, get Darwin awards. What needs to be done has already been done. No new laws need be created, and laws need be no tougher. The current laws just need to be enforced. Likewise, guns need be no safer no harder to obtain. The safety rules just need to be followed!

I think that the NRA could solve this in one simple step. Create a flyer about gun safety aimed at new parents. Distribute it for free to pediatricians for them to give to new patients. In return, Doctors employ a "don't ask don't tell" policy on the subject. Problem solved.

Don’t answer the door at night without a weapon

By Hal Scheurich
Feb 2011

PENSACOLA, Florida (WALA) - Three robbers armed with a baseball bat tried to force their way into the wrong house Saturday night in north Pensacola. “I opened the door, went over here and right off the bat, he hit me with a bat,” Crawford said.

The top of his skull was split open by the blow, but Crawford didn’t go down. He drew the handgun he was holding down on the hooded and masked invaders.

PetiteGuns

When choosing women guns there is no significant difference between “guy guns and girl guns”, it is simply a matter of hand size and upper body strength that differentiate females and males. Women usually have less upper body strength compared to the average male which is the basis most handguns are designed for, which is why most women prefer smaller guns with less recoil, making them more appealing to women looking for women guns.

Now we’re not saying women have to have tiny guns but it is important for your handgun to properly fit your hand, small enough to conceal with in your wardrobe or purse and in self-defense circumstances, it must be able to stop a raging male whom is substantially larger than you. It is also important to educate yourself on how to use your handgun safely and effectively. Without proper knowledge of your handgun and how to use it your self defense handgun will be as useful as not having one at all and could also be very dangerous to you and other innocent people around you.

PetiteGuns.com is proud to offer a wide variety of "women guns" that we feel every woman shooter should own. Some of the quality brand names we have to offer women looking for women handguns are: Armscor, Beretta, Bersa, Bond ARms, Braztech, Charter Arms, Cobra, CZ-USA, EAA, Glock, Hi-Point, Heckler & Koch, Kahr Arms, Kel Tec, Phoenix Arms, Ruger, Sig Sauer, Smith & Wesson, Taurus, and many others. PetiteGuns also carries many accessories for your women hanguns at affordable prices that you won't want to pass up.

http://www.petiteguns.com/

EDITORS NOTE: In my experience Smaller, lighter, shorter bareled guns tend to kick more. The heavier the gun and longer the barrel, the less it will kick. The larger the caliber, the more it will kick. Look for the right balance in your gun. That snubby lightweight 38 may kick harder than a standard glock 9 or a tactical 40. Shop around - Many gun ranges will let you try (rent) before you buy.

A Victory for Texas Employees

by Zee

SB 321, previously passed in the TX senate, passes TX House; Sent to Governor's desk for signature to become law.

A public or private employer may not prohibit an employee [who is a CHL] from transporting or storing a firearm or ammunition in a locked privately owned motor vehicle in a parking lot, parking garage, or other parking area the employer provides for employees.

If Governor Perry does not veto this, then it will become law and effective on Sep 1st 2011.
