The Truth about “Assault Weapons”

The Truth about “Assault Weapons”

There has been much talk lately about “Re-instating the assault weapons ban” and “taking AK-47s out of the public sector”.  There has apparently been some major confusion on the part of many people as to what this means, and what the ban really is.

First of all, you must understand that there is no such thing as an “assault weapon”.  That name is a purely political term.  There are three basic classes of firearms:  Single shot, semi-automatic, and fully automatic.

·         A typical single shot firearms can be represented in several  ways.

o   First by a “break open” style shotgun or rifle.  These models have no internal magazine and can only hold the one round that is chambered.  These types of firearms are a design holdover from early 1800’s [1] and are still commonly used in bird hunting today.

Single shot firearms can also be represented by lever action or pump action rifles and shotguns – the type often portrayed in Wild West films. These types of firearms may have an internal magazine that can hold several rounds, but fire only once before requiring the shooter to manually chamber and cock the weapon.  These are also design holdover from early 1800’s [1] and are still commonly used today.

And lastly, they can be represented by bolt action rifles which firearms may have an internal magazine that can hold several rounds, but fire only once before requiring the shooter to manually chamber and cock the weapon.

To put it more simply, you pull the trigger once, it goes bang once.

·         A semiautomatic firearm is a model that uses the action from the firing of one round to help the shooter by chambering  and cocking  the next round.

o   A typical semiautomatic firearm can be represented by a “double action” revolver, similar to or eveolved from the S&W designs in the 1850’s.

Likewise, a  semiautomatic firearm can be represented by a modern “semi” handgun, such as the popular Glock – commonly used for home defense, concealed carry, and police issue sidearms.

And finally, (and most significantly) a  semiautomatic firearm can be represented by Represented by a typical moderns hunting or sport gun, such as the M14 ranch rifle, Benelli Nova duck hunters shotgun, or the popular and customizable AR platform sport rifle.
The significant factor here is that these modern firearms are typically capable of adding on various conveniences, like flashlights or other accessories in a manner similar to mounting a scope.  This apparently makes the gun lobbyists nervous.

Despite the fact that the firearm now as a “scary flashlight” attached to it,  you pull the trigger once, it still just goes bang once.

·         A fully automatic weapon is one that uses the action from the firing of one round to both re-chamber and cock the weapon AND fire the next round automatically.

o     These are known as Machine guns and Submachine guns.

To put it more simply, you pull the trigger once, it goes bang MANY times.

Fully automatic weapons are typically used by the military for fire suppression and rapidly firing at targets from a (typically) close range.

The term “Assault weapon” is intended to conjure images of a shooter aggressively engaging targets with the capacity and speed of a fully automatic weapon (ie: in a military style assault).  This term is used to describe semi-automatic weapons, despite the fact that semi-automatic weapons would be ineffective at assault style fire suppression or at rapidly firing at multiple targets from close range.

The term was used by the anti-gun lobby and aimed at semiautomatic firearms that looked like fully automatic firearms.  If a semiautomatic firearm had any conventions or features that made it’s use more convenient to the gun owner, such as an adjustable length stock for taller shooters, or more comfortable pistol grip, or a replicable magazine, it was labeled  an “Assault weapon” and demonized.

The purpose in using this terminology is to shift the discussion of gun control from a logical debate to an emotionally charged rhetoric.  In this way, they could confuse and panic more people into agreeing to further limit an individual’s gun rights.

Regardless of what side of the gun-control argument you are on, do not let yourself be fooled  into mischaracterization of the facts or irrational thinking.

We chastise those who would judge a person by their skin color as illogical, irrational and biased.  Doing the same with a firearm - to create confusion and  fear - just because of the way it looks is just as illogical, irrational and biased.

Should we outlaw a toy BB gun or NERF gun because it LOOKS like a military weapon?  No.  Why?  Because it does not function like a military weapon.  It is not fully automatic.

A so called “Assault weapon” is no more dangerous than any other modern hunting rifle.  It functions the same way, has the same rate of fire, and even uses the same common ammunition.

There is no such thing as an “Assault Weapon”.  Don’t fall for the rhetoric.  Don’t perpetuate the lie.

Another gun ban imminent?

We are on the verge of another gun ban attempt by Uncle Sam.

Will it be through congress?

"Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein, the author of an assault-weapons ban that lapsed in 2004, said she would introduce new legislation this week. Feinstein said her planned legislation would outlaw the high-capacity magazines and military-style assault rifles... People who own such weapons now would not be required to give them up, Feinstein said."

Or by Executive Order?

"It's time for the president, I think, to stand up and lead and tell this country what we should do - not go to Congress and say, 'What do you guys want to do?'"

And what factor will the Supreme Court's recent ruling on the INDIVIDUAL right to keep and bear arms play?

Texas School District Will Let Teachers Carry Guns

By Michelle Maskaly

A tiny Texas school district may be the first in the nation to pass a law specifically allowing teachers and staff to pack heat when classes begin later this month.

Trustees at the Harrold Independent School District approved a district policy change last October so employees can carry concealed firearms to deter and protect against school shootings, provided the gun-toting teachers follow certain requirements.

Superintendent David Thweatt told FOXNews.com the policy was initiated because of safety concerns.
"We have had employees assaulted before by people in the last several years," Thweatt said. "I think that safety is big concern. We are seeing a lot of anger in society."

He wouldn't comment further on the nature of the assaults.

The Texas superintendent linked gun-free zones with the uprising of school shootings in recent years.
"When you make schools gun-free zones, it's like inviting people to come in and take advantage," Thweatt told FOXNews.com.

In order for teachers and staff to carry a pistol, they must have a Texas license to carry a concealed handgun; must be authorized to carry by the district; must receive training in crisis management and hostile situations and must use ammunition that is designed to minimize the risk of ricochet in school halls.

Thweatt said the small community is a 30-minute drive from the sheriff's office, leaving students and teachers without protection. He said the district's lone campus sits 500 feet from heavily trafficked U.S. 287, which could make it a target.

Texas law outlaws firearms on school campuses "unless pursuant to the written regulations or written authorization of the institution."

While the district's plan shot them into the national spotlight, carrying guns to school is nothing new some states. In Utah, the law allows anyone with a permit to carry a gun in public schools and state institutions of higher education.

It was unclear how many of the 50 or so teachers and staff members will be armed this fall because Thweatt did not disclose that information, to keep it from students or potential attackers.

The elephant in the room: Is it time to talk about Gun Control laws now?

The elephant in the room: Is it time to talk about Gun Control laws now?

A horrific tragedy unfolded Friday morning as a gunman, 20-year-old Adam Lanza, shot and killed his mother and then proceeded to gun down 17 first grade children and 6 adults at the Sandy Hook school in Connecticut.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families affected by this horrible event.

But even as the story unfolds, politicians are jumping at the bit to use this tragedy for their own political ends.  In Rahm Emanuel's famous words "Never let a good crisis go to waste".

Why is it that this kind of tragedy has to happen over and over and all we can do is scapegoat the issue to a "political fix" based on gun control?

Why can we not bring ourselves to address the real issue? The elephant in the room... we have a serious issue in this country with individuals with mental illness and violent tendencies.

Reports are that it was widely known that Adam Lanza suffered from a several mental issues, including a severe personality disorder. [1]

All the gun control laws in the world would not have stopped this killer, more many of his predecessors.  We already have laws that prohibit handgun possession by those under 21.  We already have gun laws that make it illegal to buy gun if you can not pass a background check.  We already have gun laws that make it illegal to possess a gun if you are deemed mentally ill.  Laws are and always will be ineffective in deterring the mentally ill and criminally insane from their actions.  Our gun control laws are already sufficient.  Laws can do no more.  The rest we must do ourselves.

The real problem is that mental illness in this country goes unchecked by those who have the responsibility for curtailing it.  I'm not speaking about the government, nor local law enforcement.  I'm talking about the friends, employers and families of the gunmen.  Those who knew him best and saw what was happening early on.

It's a syndrome.  An epidemic.  A nation wide problem.  Something that we just can't bring ourselves to deal with.  A friend or family member being in need of serious psychological help.  We deceive ourselves into thinking that we're wrong, or that the problem couldn't be that bad, or that we should leave well enough alone.  It's too hard, or it's not really my responsibility.  "Yes, they've had trouble but I can't believe my friend/brother/sister/father/mother/kids would do such a thing".  The publicity would be a blight upon our family, or our company, or our friendship if we were to do the right thing and acknowledge the issue.  It's too hard.  It's too expensive.  I want to help but I don't know where to start so I ignored it....Enough!

Far, far too many mentally ill never get the help that they need, especially those that are adults.  And as we've seen, some of those needing attention seek it out, in the most violent and public of ways.

The fault here lies not in the two inanimate objects that Adam Lanza wielded when he walked into that school, but rather in him, his mental illness, and yes... in those that failed to get help for him early on when they saw the signs. No, it is not time to talk about more gun control laws.  It's way past time to talk about proper mental health care for those with violent tenancies.

Tom Sullivan, whose son Alex also died in the Aurora theater shooting, welcomed the discussion. Sullivan and his wife spent part of the morning making sure relatives who live in the area were OK.
Sullivan said mental health, not gun control, is a more pressing concern.
"We all need someone in our lives to care," Sullivan said. "If we see a friend, a colleague, a co-worker and they're having a hard time, we need to reach out."
Some shoppers interviewed at Oregon's Clackamas Town Center, scene of the Tuesday mall killings, had similar reactions.
"We need to pay more attention to the people close to us, because I think there's a lot of signs prior to things," said shopper Sierra Delgado of Happy Valley, Ore.

Robert A. Levy, chairman of the libertarian-leaning Cato Institute and one of the organizers behind a Supreme Court case that enshrined a Second Amendment right to own guns, said Sunday that with more than 250 million guns already in circulation in the United States, restrictions on new guns would make little difference. He said by e-mail that tough gun laws did not stop a mass shooting in Norway or regular violence in places like the District of Columbia.
“I’m skeptical about the efficacy of gun regulations imposed across the board — almost exclusively on persons who are not part of the problem,” he said. “To reduce the risk of multivictim violence, we would be better advised to focus on early detection and treatment of mental illness. An early detection regime might indeed be the basis for selective gun access restrictions that even the N.R.A. would support.”

Early intervention and proper psychological help might have saved those 20 people's lives.

This AR stock lets you use pre-ban full capacity magazines legally in CA

This AR stock lets you use pre-ban full capacity magazines legally in CA

In California you can only use pre-ban full capacity magazines, with a standard magazine release, in semi-automatic rifles which do not have a pistol grip, adjustable stock or flash suppressor.

Enter the FRS-15.
The FRS-15 is a nifty looking AR-15 stock designed for the California market.  It does not have a pistol grip (as defined by the State of California) and is not adjustable.

CCW in IL: A win for the good guys

Good news!  Illinois will soon join the rest of the nation in allowing concealed Carry

A federal appeals court in Chicago tossed the state’s ban on carrying concealed weapons and gave Illinois’ Legislature 180 days to craft a law legalizing concealed carry.

"The theoretical and empirical evidence is consistent with concluding that a right to carry firearms in public may promote self-defense” - Judge Richard Posner
All 49 other states already allow CCW or open carry in one form or another.

You Must Act Now to Stop the EPA from Regulating Your Ammunition

Please contact your senator today.  Most people reading this will not.  YOU should - your senator works for YOU.

You Must Act Now to Stop the EPA from Regulating Your Ammunition

by NRA-ILA

Charlotte, NC --(Ammoland.com)- Just over two weeks ago, the U.S. Senate voted 84-12 to advance S. 3525, “The Sportsmen’s Act of 2012.”

However, this week, by a 50-41 vote, the bill suffered a setback when the Senate failed to clear a procedural hurdle and move on to finish work on the bill.

There is still time to get this critically important legislation passed, but you must act now!

S. 3525 is an essential piece of legislation focused on the expansion and enhancement of hunting, recreational fishing and shooting on federal public land.  But it’s more than that.

Of critical importance is the fact that, in addition to promoting land access, S. 3525 would amend the “Toxic Substances Control Act” to prevent this and future administrations from using the Environmental Protection Agency to eliminate the right of hunters, shooters and anglers to use traditional ammunition and fishing tackle.  The bill would amend the law to clarify that the EPA does not have the authority to regulate shot, bullets or sport fishing equipment.

The bill also allows for the importation of polar bears legally taken from approved populations in Canada before the 2008 ban.

S. 3525 could come up for a vote at any time, so please act now to secure support for this critically important bill that would prevent the EPA from regulating your ammunition!  Please contact your U.S. Senators TODAY and ask them to support S. 3525.

Gun sales soar - Black Friday sales highest EVER

November Record Month for NICS Checks

The November 2012 NSSF-adjusted National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) figure of 1,525,177 is an increase of 38.5 percent over the NSSF-adjusted NICS figure of 1,101,076 in November 2011.

For comparison, the unadjusted November 2012 NICS figure of 1,997,703 reflects a 30.8 percent increase from the unadjusted NICS figure of 1,527,454 in November 2011.

This marks the 30th straight month that NSSF-adjusted NICS figures have increased when compared to the same period the previous year. The number reported for November 2012 eclipsed the previous high in December 2011 by 8.1 percent.

Even as firearm sales have trended upward in recent years, statistics show that violent crime and firearms-related accidents continue to decrease, a fact that underscores more firearms do not lead to more crime and accidents.

Lets see here. California basically outlaws guns and makes concealed carry virtually impossible... then when things go south, they tell people to go get the guns they said they cant use.... and to protect themselves because they cant afford the police... Irony in 3....2...1...

San Bernardino, Calif., city attorney tells residents to "load their guns" after police cuts.

The official explained that because the city just outside of Los Angeles is bankrupt and slashing public safety budgets, people will need to start protecting themselves.

Penman said the city is dealing with bankruptcy, which has forced officials to cut its police force by about 80 officers. Consequently, there's been growing criticism about the police department's response time.

"Let's be honest, we don't have enough police officers. We have too many criminals living in this city."
"We need to take our streets back, we need to take our neighborhoods back and we need to protect our homes"
